Friday 22nd October – Sunday 24th October

Leyburn Jazz festival takes place for the first time this October. With performances from superb jazz musicians in styles from traditional to cutting edge contemporary, and including gypsy jazz, New Orleans-style and the Great American Songbook, there’s something for everyone!

Tennants is delighted to be sponsoring the festival. Free performances will take place in a number of Leyburn pubs across the weekend, with the headline performances taking place in The Garden Rooms at Tennants, as well as some free performances in the Café.

PROGRAMME:

Friday October 22nd

Edison Herbert – Edison Herbert is a gifted and melodic guitarist. While studying classical piano at Yorkshire College of Music he began teaching himself to play guitar. He gained valuable experience performing at church with small gospel groups and choirs. This passion for the guitar resulted in further studies at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he performed with The Guildhall Big Band featuring Randy Brecker at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club.​ Edison’s album ‘Time For Love’ is a collection of originals and standards, and is being released in August.

7.00pm – Hot Club Du Nord – Led by violinist Emma Fisk, Hot Club du Nord focus on the original repertoire of the Hot Club de France and take their inspiration from the swinging, musically inventive approach of Reinhardt & Grappelli. This repertoire consisted of instrumental versions of contemporary popular songs such as J’Attendrai/Tornerai, Si Tu Savais and Undecided; jazz standards of the 1920s and 30s – It Had to be You, Body & Soul, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Lady Be Good and Sweet Georgia Brown, and Reinhardt /Grappelli originals such as Minor Swing, Sweet Chorus, HCQ Strut, Nuages, Oriental Shuffle and Belleville.

9.00pm – Josephine Davies ‘Satori’ – Winner of the 2019 Parliamentary Award ‘Jazz Instrumentalist of the year’, Josephine Davies is a musical artist at the forefront of the UK contemporary music scene. Featuring drummer James Maddren, and bassist Dave Whitford, Satori is an ever-evolving ensemble that defies the categorization of either avant-garde or mainstream jazz, instead shifting deftly and dynamically through various imaginative soundscapes according to where their shared inspiration takes them.

Saturday October 23rd

2.30pm – Voodoo Brass Band – Formed in 2018, Voodoo Brass Band is already one of London’s freshest and most exciting new brass bands. They have seen their reputation go from strength to strength following sell-out shows all across London. Their repertoire includes both inspired arrangements of pop and rock songs as well as original material drawing on a wider range of influences reaching from London based jazz-fusion bands, such as Ezra Collective, to American brass bands, such as The Soul Rebels and Youngblood Brass Band. The band’s music is arranged between Simon Chorley (Bass Trombone) and George Jefford (Trumpet)

6.00pm – Jack Pearce – Jack Pearce is a multi-instrumentalist from Stokesley with an established connection to the North East music scene. From age 14 he joined Richmond Jam to develop his interest in Jazz and improvisation and soon progressed to regularly performing at community events with BlueBoxt Productions. Jack plays in numerous school bands such as Egglescliffe School Big Band, with which he’s played gigs across the North East and most notably with the NYJO Big Band (National Youth Jazz Orchestra). As well as school bands Jack successfully auditioned for Jambone at the Sage Gateshead 3 years ago and was soon travelling up and down the A1 on a regular basis.

7.00pm – Pau Edis Triptych – As featured on BBC Radio 3 Jazz Lineup – North East-born Paul Edis (piano/clarinet/flute) Rob Walker (drums/percussion) and Paul Susans (electric and double bass) AKA Triptych bring a diverse repertoire and extensive experience to create original music that embraces a wealth of influences and different approaches.Their music embraces long form composition, looking beyond the more conventional structures often found in straight-ahead jazz and including unexpected sounds and grooves.

The trio has performed at Gateshead International Jazz Festival, Darlington Jazz Festival, DJazz and various venues and clubs across the North.

9.00pm – Ian Shaw – Ian Shaw has been described as one of the most distinctive, original and creative jazz singers that the UK has produced, as well as being a talented pianist, song writer, actor, presenter and record producer. Twice voted “Best Jazz Vocalist” at the prestigious BBC Jazz Awards, the recorded output of the London based singer and consummate showman includes three US releases. His solo shows and performances with his regular piano trio become ever more popular but he is also much in demand as the featured soloist with big bands and orchestras both in the UK and internationally.

Sunday October 24th

12.30pm Showcase concert featuring Paul Edis Triptych and young local musicians.

Paul Edis will lead a jazz workshop for young local musicians on Sunday morning, culminating in this showcase performance.

2.00pm – Pedigree Jazz Band – Leader Chris Walker and Pedigree Jazz band recreate the hit tunes of the British “Trad Jazz” boom of the 50’s and 60’s. In their show “Salute to Trad Jazz” they play the most popular tunes of the era, such as ‘Midnight in Moscow’, ‘Petite Fleur’, ‘Green Leaves Of Summer’ and many others. The band has proved to be a resounding success, with rave reviews and repeat bookings from nearly everywhere they perform.

Free parking will be available at Tennant’s Garden Rooms and at the Auction Mart at the top of the town.
