On display until 17th January 2022

A display of a select group of sculpture by COADE Ltd.

At COADE, Stephen Pettifer and his team of highly skilled craftsmen recreate classical sculpture and make contemporary pieces and private commissions in Coade stone, bronze, lead, stone, plaster and terracotta.

Created from stoneware using a secret recipe and then fired at a very high heat, Coade stone makes it possible to produce sculpture with the finest detail that is also incredibly durable and has the appearance of stone. It was first developed in the 18th Century by Eleanor Coade, a highly successful businesswoman of her time whose work can be found in all parts of the British Isles.

Stephen Pettifer trained in Sculpting, Stone Carving, Restoration and Conservation at The City & Guilds of London Art School.  Having worked as a restorer and trained under influential sculptors, Stephen developed an interest in English terracotta. By an extensive process of trial and research he refined the processes used to manufacture Coade stone. Stephen founded Coade LTD in 2000 in London before moving his studio to the Wilton Estate.  He has restored works of art for The Royal Palaces, Westminster Abbey and many Historic Houses. Stephen continues to develop as a sculptor, combining his knowledge of materials with a delicate and acute eye for his subject, pursuing his passion for portraiture and sculpture.

Whether it be a monumental figure of Triton, able to withstand the harshest of winters encased in ice or a hart’s tongue fern fountain with an 11ft span; from portraiture to the finest classical ornament, the sculptors at COADE can produce it.
