“Fate” by Richard Louis Garbe, c.1921

20th March - 4th May 2025

Celebrating the Centenary of the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris, which launched the Art Deco style onto a global platform.

The interwar years of the 1920s and 1930s was a time of sweeping change in art and design and the world as a whole. A new era called for a new style, which would encapsulate the rapid onslaught of modernity and herald the beginning of a new age.

The opening years of the 20th century saw artists and designers looking beyond Western artistic traditions, with influential movements such as Cubism, Bauhaus and the Vienna Secession breaking boundaries. Gradually, a new modern style was born and presented at its peak in grand fashion at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris. The exhibition was extraordinarily influential and launched the Art Deco style around the world, even inspiring the movement’s name which was coined in the 1960s. With over 15,000 exhibitors from 20 countries and elaborate stands that lined both sides of the Seine, the exhibition was a wonder to behold.

Art Deco, however, is not one singular definable entity; rather it is a pastiche of different styles, sources of inspiration and influences from the Aztecs to the Russian Ballet. This new exhibition will give a taste of some of the defining influences, themes and makers of the era, featuring an exceptional private collection of ladies’ millinery, accessories and costume from the 1920s and 1930s, and a private collection of decorative arts and design.
